div is recognized as one of two generic HTML element http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Span_and_div http://www.w3.org/wiki/HTML/Elements/div http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_div.asp. div serves as a block-level grouping element, while span has an inline function. In practice, div is used for large scale organization, and is the most suitable for HTModL purposes.

In the interests of simplicity, and to make it easy and fast for scripts to locate HTModL nodes, only the div element may be used as a HTModL node. For the same reasons, each HTModL node must have a class attribute that contains at least one class, and only the first class is used by HTModL.
